ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has donated 6,921 sacks of glutinous rice to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in this southern port city.

Segundo Sigmunfreud Barte, BOC-Zamboanga District collector, said the 6,921 sacks or 173 metric tons of rice were turned over Wednesday to the DWSD regional office.

Barte said the donation was received by Nestor Ramos, DSWD regional director, in compliance with the directive of President Rodrigo Duterte to donate it to the DSWD for the agency's relief operations.

The tons of rice were part of the cargoes they seized in separate anti-smuggling operations in this city, Barte said.

Ramos said the rice will be distributed to families of farmers affected by the El Niño weather phenomenon.

According to the Department of Agriculture, an estimated 30,000 families were affected by the onslaught of the El Niño weather phenomenon here in the region.

He said the majority of El Niño-stricken farmers are from the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga Sibugay. A few of them are from this city.

Earlier, Fatima Caminan, DSWD assistant regional director for operations, said they have also distributed family food packs to the affected farmers. (PNA)
