DUMAGUETE CITY -- A suspected member of the New People’s Army (NPA), the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP), was killed during an encounter with government troops on the boundary of Negros Oriental and Negros Occidental provinces early Saturday.

Initial reports from the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office and the Philippine Army said that at about 5 a.m., troops of the 62nd Infantry Battalion encountered about 15 suspected NPA members between Upper Carol-an in Ayungon, Negros Oriental and Barangay Carol-an, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

The firefight lasted for about 20 minutes before the suspected insurgents fled.

The body of the slain rebel was recovered, as well as one high-powered firearm, an anti-personnel mine, two bandoliers, and alleged subversive documents.

As of press time, the soldiers were continuing their clearing operations. No other details were made available to the media. (PNA)
