MANILA — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Friday announced the arrest of a Chinese and the surrender of a South Korean who are both wanted for crimes they have supposedly committed in their countries.
BI intelligence officer Bobby Raquepo identified the foreigners as Chinese national Zheng Zhuhong, 51, and South Korean national Kim Donghyun, 36, who will both be deported for being undesirable aliens and posing risk to public welfare and safety.
He said the Chinese was arrested on Tuesday at the Aranque Market in Sta. Cruz, Manila pursuant to a mission order issued by BI Commissioner Jaime Morente.
A warrant for her arrest was issued last December 2016 by the municipal public security bureau in Jinjiang, China for her alleged involvement in economic crimes wherein she reportedly defrauded her victims of more than PHP30 million yuan or USD4.4 million. She was said to have fled to the Philippines last year.
He added that Chinese authorities have sought assistance from the BI in arresting Zheng, adding that they have already canceled her passport.
On the other hand, the officials of the South Korean embassy in Manila have facilitated the surrender of Kim on Tuesday.
Raquepo, who is also head of the BI’s Fugitive Search Unit (FSU), said the Korean was issued a deportation order by the BI board of commissioners nearly three years ago after the embassy informed the bureau about his presence in the country.
The Korean embassy said Kim and three other suspects conspired to illegally operate and maintain a sports gambling site on the Internet.
Seoul authorities alleged that as a result of their cyber fraud activities, the suspects amassed profits of more than USD200,000 from bettors who remitted their money to illegally borrowed bank accounts.
The two foreigners are now detained at the BI detention facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.
Upon deportation, Raquepo noted that the foreigners will also be banned from re-entering the country as their names have been included in the BI’s list of unwanted aliens. (PNA)
