MANILA -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday slammed the ambush which resulted in the death of four police officers in Negros Oriental and described it as another treacherous act of communist rebels.

"For the nth time, the CPP/NPA (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army) has shown its insincerity to forge a peace agreement with government by continuing to wage its campaign of terror and oppression against the peasants, and tribal communities in the countryside," PNP deputy spokesperson, Lt. Col. Kimberly Molitas said in a statement.

Molitas added that the PNP extends its condolences to the families of Cpl. Relebert Beronio, Pat. Raffy Callo and Pat. Roel Cabellon, Pat. Marquino de Leon, who were gunned down by suspected NPA members in Sitio Yamot, Barangay Mabato in the town of Ayungon on Thursday afternoon.

"We assure the bereaved families of all available assistance that government can extend if only to ease their suffering over this tragic loss," she said

She also condemned the communist rebels' barbaric act of looting the dead police officers of their belongings.

"Still not satisfied with the blood of their prey, the terrorists also looted the dead of their firearms, valuables and personal belongings, and drove off with the victims’ motorcycles," Molitas said.

A hot pursuit operation is underway in Negros Oriental against the assailants.

She called on NPA members to surrender and return to the fold of the law.

"We call on the NPA fighters to sever ties and withdraw support from their CPP/NDF (National Democratic Front) masters, and embrace the police-church backed localized peace talks in order for them to lead normal and peaceful lives with their families," Molitas said.

The CPP-NPA is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines. (PNA)
