ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The chief of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) said Tuesday he supports the reinstatement of the death penalty for heinous crimes, which forms part of the legislative agenda spelled out by President Rodrigo Duterte in his 4th State of the National Address (SONA) on Monday.

Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, Westmincom chief, said the reinstatement of the death penalty will boost the campaign of the government against the proliferation of illegal drugs in the country.

Sobejana said the reinstatement of the penalty will serve as a strong deterrence for individuals from getting involved in the illegal drug trade.

During his fourth SONA on Monday, Duterte requested Congress to reinstate the death penalty for heinous crimes related to drugs, as well as plunder.

Duterte noted that after three years since he took office, the problems on illegal drugs and corruption continue to persist despite the administration’s moral recovery initiatives.

Sobejana said the capital punishment would ensure that "no one will dare to get involved in drug trafficking and other heinous crimes with the reinstatement of the death penalty".

He added they will continue to provide support to the other agencies of government in the fight against illegal drugs in areas where their assistance is needed. (PNA)
