Ex-rebel, farmers’ group head killed by 'NPA' in NegOr

DUMAGUETE CITY — A rebel returnee and a farmers’ association leader were shot dead by alleged New People’s Army (NPA) members in Barangay Poblacion, Zamboanguita, Negros Oriental.

A report from the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) identified the victims as Weny Encilay Alegre, a rebel returnee, 37, a farmer-resident of Barangay Calango, Zamboanguita, and Felimino Elvinia Janayan, also a farmer-resident of Calango and president of the United Calango Farmers’ Association. 

Police investigation revealed that at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the two victims had left a cockpit and were riding a motorcycle for home when four assailants on board two motorcycles tailed them along Arellano Street in Zamboanguita proper and fired at them.

The suspects were described to be wearing jackets, face masks, and ball caps.

The victims succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds to their bodies.

The suspects allegedly shouted “Mabuhay ang NPA” before leaving the crime scene.

 Police recovered 11 pieces of fired cartridge shells of .45 caliber handgun, two empty 9mm shells and two pieces of slugs of unknown caliber. (PNA)
