MANILA -- Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Tuesday said he will look into reports that members of the Army's Scout Ranger Regiment and other elite units are allegedly protecting individuals connected to illegal gambling.

"I will look into that," he said in a media briefing, adding that such allegations, if true, are improper and highly irregular.

Earlier reports claimed that these elite troops are being tapped to secure these persons involved in the illegal gambling syndicates.

Lorenzana, meanwhile, said he is not privy on reports claiming that some retired military generals were able to acquire small town lotto franchises and used this as fronts for "jueteng".

"I have no knowledge on that. I'm sorry I cannot answer that," the DND chief stressed. (PNA)
