Ex-village chair shot dead in Davao City

DAVAO CITY -- A former barangay chairman in this city was shot dead by unidentified perpetrators along C.P. Garcia Highway on Saturday afternoon.

Capt. Maria Theresita Gaspan, spokesperson of Davao City Police Office (DCPO), said the victim was identified as Arnold Mascarinas Maalat, 49, a former village chief of Barangay Communal, Buhangin District, here.

Gaspan added the victim had been in jail for violation of RA 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 on September 2017 and was released recently due to a granted plea bargaining agreement.

Initial investigation showed the victim and his companion named Juleto Cayonda were walking towards the highway coming from Buhangin Gallery when two unidentified suspects appeared from behind and repeatedly shot the victim.

The suspects immediately fled onboard a black and white Honda XRM 125 towards the south portion of the Diversion Road in this city.

According to the report, the victim sustained three gunshot wounds on his back and another one at the back of his head causing his instantaneous death as declared by Medical 33 of Central 911 which immediately responded.

Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered a deformed slug and three empty shells of .45-caliber pistol which were subjected for ballistic examination.

The body of the victim was brought to Angel Funeral Parlor on F. Torres St. this city for autopsy. (PNA)
