DAVAO CITY--Members of the 19th City Council approved Tuesday afternoon a measure that granted financial assistance to the earthquake victims of Itbayat town in Batanes.

Amounting to PHP1 million, the financial assistance will go to the 1,025 families or 2,968 individuals affected by the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the town on July 27.

The earthquake killed nine people, wounded 64, and damaged 80 houses in four barangays.

Alfredo Baloran, Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) head, said the fund will be sourced from the Quick Response Fund of Davao.

“We will personally hand over the cash assistance to them as soon as we can. We no longer need to send them food packs since based on the reports that we received, they have enough food and what they need is a financial assistance to help them rebuild their houses,” Baloran said.

Data from the NDRRMC showed that as of August 5, a total of 378 aftershocks were recorded in Itbayat town.

A total of 72 families or 261 persons are currently staying at the town’s covered court/municipal plaza in Barangay San Rafael. (PNA)
