MANILA — A Korean wanted for fraud in his country is awaiting deportation, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) said on Friday.
According to BI port operations division chief Grifton Medina, the fugitive identified as 38-year-old Jang Hongsuk will be sent back to his homeland after the Bureau’s board of commissioners issued the order for his summary deportation.
The foreigner was intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 last August 9 as he was about to board an Air Asia flight to Seoul.
“He seemed to not know that he was already in our alert list of wanted foreign fugitives when he booked his flight,” Medina said in a statement.
The Korean is presently detained at the BI Detention Center in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City.
Lawyer Rommel Tacorda, BI-NAIA border control and intelligence unit chief, reported that Jang was included in the BI’s passenger alert list after the South Korean embassy informed the bureau about his presence in the country.
He added that the foreign national arrived in the country last Feb. 10, nearly six months after he committed his alleged crimes in Korea. It was only last month, however, that the Interpol issued a red notice on the fugitive.
Seoul authorities alleged that sometime in August last year, Jang conspired with other suspects in defrauding three victims of more than 8.2 million won or more than USD6,700.
He allegedly introduced himself to the victims as a financial investment advisor, and enticed them to withdraw and transfer money to the bank accounts of the fraudsters. (PNA)
