ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The City Health Office here hopes to see a decrease in dengue cases in the city as records show a steep decline in reported dengue cases.

Dr. Dulce Miravite, City Health Office chief, said Thursday a downward trend has been recorded in the number of dengue cases for the months of August and September, at 1,242 cases and 209 cases, respectively.

Miravite said this came following the peak dengue case period of July, when 1,476 cases were recorded.

“Hopefully, we will be able to sustain this trend,” she said, adding that the local health office has continued its campaign against dengue in the barangays and in schools.

In particular, she said, the public awareness campaign includes the 4S strategy or "search and destroy, self-protection, seek early consultation, say yes to fumigation and misting," as well as the four o’clock habit, the Action Barangay Kontra Dengue (ABKD), and the Den-Get Out campaign.

She said priority attention has been given to the 10 barangays with the most number of dengue cases -- Calarian, Talon-Talon, Tetuan, Tumaga, Tugbungan, Pasonanca, San Roque, Sta. Maria, Putik, and Guiwan.

The local health office has recorded 5,828 suspected dengue cases with 29 mortalities since January this year. (PNA)
