ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has registered some 37,549 new voters during the two-month voters’ registration conducted in this city.

The voters’ registration started August 1 and ended Monday, September 30.

Lawyer Jan Christian Babiera, second district election officer, said Wednesday that 19,722 new voters registered in his district while the remaining 17,827 in the first district.

Babiera said that they also accommodated transfer and reactivation of voter registration as well as the correction of records aside from the listing of new electorates.

“The registration of voters went on smoothly for the period of two months,” he said.

The two-month voters’ registration was conducted in preparation for the 2020 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

However, Babiera said they might conduct registration of voters next year if and when the election for barangay and SK will be postponed.

Meanwhile, Babiera said the list of newly-registered voters will be sent to the Comelec central office for the Automated Fingerprint Identification System to ensure that none of them are multiple registrants. (PNA)
