BACOLOD CITY -- The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has corrected the “failed” rating initially given to the Municipality of Binalbagan in Negros Occidental on its compliance with the road clearing operations.

Director Odilon Pasaraba of the Bureau of Local Government Supervision, in his Oct. 16 letter addressed to Mayor Alejandro Mirasol, said the southern Negros town has been “inadvertently included” in the initial list of local government units (LGUs) that have failed the validation.

A copy of the letter, received by the DILG-Western Visayas on Tuesday, was posted by the LGU-Binalbagan on its official Facebook page on Wednesday.

“This was due to a submission error that has already been rectified,” Pasaraba explained on how Binalbagan was listed as “failed”.

He clarified that the municipality has actually passed the validation. “The undersigned assures the honorable mayor that the LGU has obtained a passing rating and has been removed from the said list,” the DILG official added.

Mirasol had earlier questioned the assessment rate, saying the town officials did their best to comply and the validation team gave them an 80 percent grade.

In the DILG assessment and validation list as of October 8, 2018, Binalbagan was among the 97 LGUs nationwide and the only one in Western Visayas given a “failed” rating.

However, in the updated Oct. 15 report, Binalbagan was already listed with “low compliance”.

“In this regard, we assure the public that the mayor does not neglect his duties and compliance (with the DILG directives),” the LGU-Binalbagan said.

In his order dated July 29, DILG Secretary Eduardo Año gave mayors 60 days “to exercise their powers essential to reclaim public roads which are being used for private ends, and in the process rid them of illegal structures and constructions.” (PNA)
