ZAMBOANGA CITY -- Another suspect involved in a shootout that injured a policeman was killed in a continuing follow-up operation in Lamitan City, Basilan province, the police disclosed Wednesday.

Maj. John Paolo Carracedo, Lamitan City police chief, said suspect Yhajir Tangil, 18, was killed in a shootout around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in Barangay Matibay, Lamitan City.

Carracedo said the shootout ensued when Tangil grabbed the .45-caliber pistol of one of the soldiers and opened fire prompting the troops to return fire while being escorted to the Lamitan City police headquarters.

Carracedo said Tangil was arrested during follow-up operation launched after the November 4 shootout in Barangay Limook, Lamitan City that injured Pat. Ronnie Sawadi, 27.

Sawadi, together with other policemen and soldiers, was manning a checkpoint when the shootout happened in Barangay Limook.

One of Tangil’s companions, Husrie Daimon, was killed during the shootout in the same day.

Tangil was the second suspect who was neutralized by pursuing security forces.

Carracedo said the remains of Tangil was claimed by Jamil Lintawan, barangay chairperson of Tipo-Tipo Proper, Tipo-Tipo, Basilan, for internment according to Muslim rites.

Recovered from the shootout scene was a .45-caliber pistol with two spent shells, which Tangil seized from the escorting soldiers, police said. (PNA)
