ILIGAN CITY -- Two construction workers died on the spot while one was wounded when they were shot by an unidentified person in Barangay Emmie Punud, Marawi City at about 7 a.m. on Thursday.

The crime scene was near Area 1 in Barangay Sagonsongan, where more than a thousand displaced families live are taking shelter.

Col. Madzgani Mukaram, chief of the Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office, identified the dead victims as George Ambad Butad and Arturo Nadayag Macasero, and the wounded as Dave Ranario Morsua, residents of Matampay, Matungao, Lanao del Norte.

Mukaram said the victims were working as carpenters in Marawi City.

They were on their way to work on board a motorcycle driven by Macasero when their assailant flagged them down and had a brief conversation with them, he said.

"Suddenly the suspect, without apparent reason, shot the victims several times that caused the death of Butad and Macasero, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds," Mukaram said.

The killer then fled on a motorcycle, heading towards the direction of Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur.

Morsua was brought to the nearest hospital for treatment.

The police is investigating the motive of the crime.

Meanwhile, Dr. Habib Macaayong, president of the Mindanao State University (MSU) System, said that since 2014, Butad was no longer employed by the school.

"The act of violence has nothing to do with MSU and its constituents. It is absolutely absurd and unwarranted to connect it with the university in any way. We are saddened by the ruthless shooting of the victims and repeat our condemnation of violence in any form, whoever the victims are," Macaayong said. (PNA)
