ZAMBOANGA CITY -- The National Power Corp. (Napocor) will operate a diesel-fired power plant that would provide Sacol Island, some 20 km. east of Zamboanga City, with 24-hour power service.

The project will benefit 500 households on Sacol Island, which comprises barangays Landang Gua, Pasilmanta, Busay, and Landang Laum.

Engineer Abdulsana Hasinon, Sacol power plant head, said the project falls under Napocor’s Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) operations and is estimated to cost PHP25 million.

Hasinon said the distribution lines are being managed by the Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative (Zamcelco).

Lawyer Rogel Teves, SPUG vice president, and SPUG Mindanao Operations department manager, Nestor Flauta, spearheaded the ceremonial inauguration of the project here Friday.

Sacol is the largest among the 28 islands off the mainland coast of Zamboanga City. It is inhabited mostly by fishermen and their families. (PNA)
