KIDAPAWAN CITY – More than 1,000 daily wage earners have been displaced by the series of tremors that rocked this city and nearby towns in North Cotabato, the regional labor department said Saturday.
Director Sisinio Cano of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) 12 (Soccsksargen), said a total of 1,012 workers in the services sector have been affected since the establishments that employed them had to be shut down following the earthquakes.
“Several business establishments in the city were forced to cease operation due to cracks on its buildings,” Cano said in a radio interview here.
He said the number could be much higher once data gathering on the employment status of workers in quake-hit towns shall be completed.
Most of the displaced workers were employees of malls and grocery centers.
Some of the business establishments that remained close to date are the Gaisano Grand Mall of Kidapawan, Yongson Shopping Mall, Unitop Commercial Center, Mang Inasal food chain, two Jollibee outlets, Sugni Superstore, Prudenciado Building, Sepol Building, and United Coconut Planters Bank, among others.
