LINGAYEN, Pangasinan -- The provincial government of Pangasinan has announced that Nov. 13 is a special non-working holiday to honor the late Speaker Eugenio Perez.

A memorandum issued by Governor Amado Espino III posted on the province’s Facebook page on Monday said the holiday declaration will provide Pangasinenses the opportunity to honor Perez “who has done so much for the province”.

Perez is a Pangasinense born on Nov. 13, 1896 in a village (now Basista town) in San Carlos City. He was elected Speaker of the House when the first Congress of the Philippines convened in 1946.

A wreath-laying ceremony in front of his bust statue in San Carlos city is held annually to celebrate his birth date.

Republic Act 6721 titled "An Act Declaring November Thirteen Of Each Year Special Public Holiday in the Province of Pangasinan" was approved March 20, 1989, and has long been celebrated in Pangasinan. (PNA)
