CAMP SIONGCO, Maguindanao -- Two members of the military’s Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Unit (CAFGU) cheated death after being fired upon by a gunman in Ampatuan town of this province on Tuesday.

In a report, Brig. Gen. Diosdado Carreon, Army’s 6th Infantry Division commander, identified the targets of the attack as Ruben Estoque and Ricky Oliveros, both CAFGU members assigned with the Army’s 38th Infantry Battalion (38IB) in Barangay Kauran, Ampatuan town.

The militiamen were onboard a motorbike traversing the road in Barangay Matagabong, Ampatuan when fired upon by a lone attacker at 7:10 a.m.

It was not clear if the militiamen were unarmed at the time of the incident.

“Both militiamen dodged the barrage of gunfire and sped off from the scene,” Carreon said.

The two immediately reported the incident to the 38IB, which in turn sent troopers to the area.

After a brief chase, the soldiers arrested the shooting suspect, identified as Saber Maliga Kusain, 23, of Barangay Banaba, Datu Abdullah Sangki, Maguindanao.

Recovered from the suspect were a .45-caliber pistol, 16 rounds of live ammunition, and a packet of shabu.

The suspect is undergoing interrogation at the custodial facility of the Ampatuan police station, police said. (PNA)
