LEGAZPI CITY -- Army troopers overran on Tuesday a suspected New People’s Army (NPA) lair following an encounter in an outskirt village of Del Gallego town in Camarines Sur province, an Army official said on Wednesday.

In an interview, Maj. Ricky Aguilar, Philippine Army's 9th Infantry Division public affairs chief, said a platoon of Army Scout Rangers engaged some 20 NPA guerrillas in a 30-minute firefight at around 2 p.m. at the boundary of Del Gallego and Lupi towns.

"The rebels led by Ka Rudy of Guerilla Front (GF) Larangan 2 operating in the province, sensing that they were overpowered by the Army rangers, fled to neighboring villages," Aguilar said.

Following the running gunbattle, the soldiers discovered a temporary rebel lair where they recovered seven Molotov bombs, two boxes of government arsenal consisting of 5.56mm sniper bullets, empty M-16 magazines, Epson projector, transistor radio, four cell phones, three rolls of electric wires, generator set, two gallons of gasoline, two sacks of rice, food stuffs and supplies and documents.
