ILIGAN CITY--The police escort of Masiu, Lanao del Sur town Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr. died on Monday afternoon, a day after he was hit by a bullet when unidentified gunmen ambushed the mayor's convoy on Sunday morning.

Col. Madzgani Mukaram, chief of Lanao del Sur Provincial Police Office, on Wednesday said Staff Sgt. Jabbar Romato Pangandaman died around 7 a.m. at Amai Pakpak Medical Center due to gunshot wounds on his abdomen.

The two other wounded civilian-companions of the mayor-- are now in stable condition at the same hospital.

The mayor was on his way to the municipal hall in Masiu where he would preside over the municipal peace and order council meeting when his convoy was ambushed by unidentified gunmen in Buadiposo Buntong town, Lanao del Sur.

Mukaram said the police identified the leader of the gunmen after they found a wallet with identification cards that was left in the vicinity of the ambush site.

"We cannot divulge yet the identity of the person of interest because we are still looking for witnesses who are willing to submit written testimonies”, Mukaram said.

Mukaram said the ambush may have to do with politics in the area but he did not elaborate.

"The ID we recovered from the wallet led us to the possibilities na may pulitika ang motibo (there is a political motive). Pero mas pinalalim pa natin ang imbestigasyon (but we are looking deeper into it)," Mukaram said. (PNA)
