DUMAGUETE CITY – The Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office (NOPPO) has intensified its efforts to curb illegal gambling activities in the province.

This followed complaints of rampant illegal gambling activities in different parts of the province over the weekend, which have reached the office of the provincial police director, Col. Julian Entoma, said Police Chief Master Sgt. Edilberto Euraoba III, NOPPO public information officer, on Tuesday.

Euraoba said records show that in just two days, from Nov. 17-18, a total of 16 operations were conducted across the province with 69 persons arrested.

The operations included illegal cockfighting raids and crackdown on cara y cruz and “suertres”, an illegal numbers game based on the Suertres lotto under the small-town lottery of the government.

Meanwhile, in English, cara y cruz means heads and tails of a coin. It uses three coins, providing one of four outcomes of which you select a minimum of one, and up to three possible outcomes.

Euraoba said Entoma has ordered police personnel to intensify the anti-illegal gambling drive in the province.

“The directive of the provincial police director serves as a message to all the constituents to stop their illegal gambling activities, and to the PNP (Philippine National Police) personnel to enforce the law, without fear or favor,” he added. (PNA)
