DUMAGUETE CITY – The renowned Las Piñas Boys’ Choir will be performing at three different venues in Negros Oriental this week as part of its 50th anniversary celebration this year.

The Commission on Church Cultural Heritage of the Diocese of Dumaguete is spearheading the concerts scheduled Nov. 29 to Dec. 1, said Msgr. Julius Perpetuo S. Heruela, executive chairman of the Commission.

At 2 p.m. on Nov. 29, Friday, the choir will perform in a matinee show solely for students at the St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD).

The following day, a gala performance is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the St. Augustine of Hippo Parish Church in nearby Bacong town, where Heruela is the parish priest.

The St. Augustine Church is known for its centuries-old pipe organ, one of the few remaining in the country that is still playing, and declared a National Historical Treasure of the Philippines.

The third of the series of concerts will be on Dec. 1, at the Bonbonon Ruins in Bonbonon, Siaton, a town about an hour’s drive south of this capital.

The Bonbonon ruins dates back to the Spanish era and was formerly a convent of the Catholic friars, local historians here say.

“We are blessed to have the Las Piñas Boys’ Choir include the Diocese of Dumaguete in their 50th anniversary tour because I believe it is the first time for them to come here,” Heruela said.

Each performance will have a different repertoire that would include classical, pop, OPM, and Christmas songs.

Dumaguete Bishop Julito Cortes, the honorary chair of the Diocesan Commission on Church Cultural Heritage and head of the Episcopal Commission on the Cultural Heritage of the Church of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, will host a welcome dinner for the Las Piñas Boys’ Choir.

Proceeds of the series of concerts will be for the Diocesan Commission on Church Cultural Heritage projects, such as the crafting of a Conservation Management Plan for the diocese, Heruela said. (PNA)
