COTABATO CITY – Residents from high-risk areas in Kidapawan City will be prime beneficiaries of housing units to be put up by the National Housing Authority (NHA), officials said Tuesday.

“These will be permanent housing units,” said Kidapawan Mayor Joseph Evangelista, referring to the 1,700 house structures that the NHA will put up in the city.

Evangelista said the commitment was made by NHA General Manager Marcelino Escalada Jr. during the post-earthquake command conference Monday.

Beneficiaries of the government housing program are residents of communities classified by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) as “high-risk areas” where landslides and huge soil erosions are likely to take place during strong episodes of earthquakes.

Evangelista said the city government will have its share in the project by procuring lands where the housing units will be set-up.

Earlier, the City Council of Kidapawan has approved a resolution authorizing Evangelista to apply for a PHP100-million loan with the Land Bank of the Philippines to be used for the recovery and rehabilitation efforts. (PNA)
