CEBU CITY -- At least 43 loose firearms and two hand grenades were recovered by the Cebu City Police Office during the two-day implementation of "Oplan Nickel", which started Friday.

Lt. Col. Randy Korret, the head of the City Mobile Force Company (CMFC) at CCPO, said the confiscated firearms were from residents in the mountain barangays here.

“This is (the) result of our two days, (that started) yesterday (Dec. 6) visiting barangays in the mountain areas, (and) coordinating with our barangay officials as part of our major combat operation in our campaign against loose firearms,” Korret said.

The loose firearms were from barangays of Tagba-o, Tabunan, Tap-tap, Pung-ol, Malubog, Sudlon II, Sirao and Agsungot.

He urged individuals to surrender the firearms peacefully and assured the public that no cases will be filed against those who will voluntarily surrender their weapons and explosives.

“This is part of our move to account all loose firearms and proactive measure for the peaceful celebration of Christmas Season and Sinulog festivities,” Korret said.

Recovered were 15 cal. 38 revolvers, seven cal. 357 revolvers, three cal. .22 rifles, another three 9mm black widow pistols, and two cal. 45 pistols.

CMFC-CCPO also took custody of a cal. .22 revolver, a cal.5.56 revolver frontier, a 5.56 improvised pistol, a 7.62 improvised pistol, a KG9 Sub-machinegun, and a 9MM AR 15 Sub-machine gun.

They also confiscated a US M1 Caliber 30 Garand Sniper Rifle, a US M1 .30 caliber Carbine, a 7.62 Bolt Action Sniper Rifle, a 5.56 Bolt Action Sniper Rifle, a .30 caliber Bolt Action Rifle and a 2GA shotgun.

Two hand grenades--an MK2 and an M61 hand grenade--and 121 assorted ammunition were also surrendered.

Seven days ago, CMFC also confiscated another 41 firearms during the 118th police anniversary of CCPO on November 22.

Some 204 loose firearms were also presented as a result of their three-month operation.

Korret said they went into an intensive anti-loose firearm drive after receiving a report from Camp Crame that there were more than 25,000 loose firearms in Cebu City alone.

CMFC visited the barangays in Cebu City which reportedly have individuals who own unlicensed firearms.

They find it easy to convince residents in mountain barangays to give up their unlicensed firearms, Korret said, but were having a hard time locating loose firearms in the city proper.

Korret said they will be setting a quota of 500 recovered firearms within six months as part of their operations to recover all loose firearms in Cebu City.

The confiscated firearms and explosives will be turned over to the police supply officer of Police Regional Office (PRO-7) for proper disposition. (PNA)
