CEBU CITY – A woman who works as a clerk in a village here was arrested by anti-drug operatives after she was caught selling shabu to a poseur buyer on Wednesday night.

The drug enforcement unit of Police Station 6 (San Nicolas Police Station) acted on a concerned citizen's report about a barangay worker who reportedly was selling shabu at Sitio Magpalaser, Hipodromo village here.

Major Kenneth Albotra, chief of Station 6 who led the operation, identified the suspect as Anna Liza Mendez, 40, who is tasked to issue barangay clearance to the village residents.

He said the drug enforcement unit of his station placed Mendez under surveillance for a week before conducting the buy-bust operation.

“Even if she is working with the government, the more that we will go after her. She should be the role model in their community, as we in the government are intensifying our operations and campaign as directed also by our President Rodrigo Duterte to intensify the fight against illegal drugs,” Albotra said.

The operatives were able to seize from the suspect small plastic sachets containing alleged shabu with a total Dangerous Drugs Board value of PHP27,000.

Mendez denied selling drugs but admitted using shabu for “medicinal purposes”.

The chief of police in San Nicolas district said Mendez told them that it could help ease her tension, but did not elaborate what kind of sickness she is suffering from.

The suspect has seven children.

Mendez is still considered as a newly-identified drug personality in the Cebu City Police Office record, Albotra said.

The neighbors of the suspect complained about the suspicious transactions at Mendez’s house, claiming that unknown people come to her residence especially during night time. (PNA)
