MANILA -- Overseas Filipino workers in South Korea are getting a higher pay starting this month after the minimum wage for all workers has increased, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) said.

In a statement, the agency advised overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to be informed of Korea’s new wage system.

The OFWs are also urged to seek assistance from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office or the nearest job stability center which has jurisdiction over their workplace if the employer failed to pay the prescribed salary.

All workers, regardless of their employment status or nationality, will be receiving an hourly minimum wage of 8,580 Korean Won (PHP370) from the 8,350 Korean Won (PHP360) hourly rate in 2019.

The order took effect on January 1, 2020.

With the wage adjustment, employees will receive a monthly minimum wage of 1,795,310 Korean Won (PHP77,540) at 209 working hours per month and 40-hour workweek, including paid holidays.

The wage increase is approved under the host country’s new wage system as defined in its Labor Standards Act.

South Korea is one of the Philippines’ favored destinations for OFWs because of the demand for foreign workers under its Employment Permit System (EPS).

The EPS aimed to address its labor shortage in various industries such as agriculture, stockbreeding, fishery, construction, and manufacturing. (PNA)
