ZAMBOANGA CITY – Stakeholders vowed to support the government-led initiatives to ensure that this city remains free from African swine fever (ASF) during a forum organized by the Department of Agriculture (DA) here Friday.

The forum, attended by more than 50 participants from the livestock industry, fishing firms, and other sectors, discussed the effects of ASF, as well as the prevention and control of the disease, which mainly affects the swine industry.

DA 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) executive director Rad Donn Cedeño said the forum intended to synchronize efforts and instill public awareness of the ASF.

While there is no ASF-related ban in the region, Cedeño said they continue to regulate the shipment of pork and pork products to ensure they are not infected with ASF.

He said the mortality rate of the ASF is 100 percent since there is still neither cure nor vaccine against the animal disease. (PNA)
