San Juan, Palayan declared CBA co-champions due to Covid-19

MANILA – Defending champion San Juan Knights Navy and Palayan City Capitals have been declared as co-champions in the 2020 Community Basketball Association-Pilipinas basketball tournament.

CBA founding president Carlo Maceda said the decision was reached upon consultation with officials of both San Juan and Palayan City due to the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine imposed by the government to contain the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

"The CBA officials have consulted with both teams involved in the finals and it was unanimously decided with the best interest of the fans, the players, the team owners and team officials," Maceda said in an official statement dated March 16.

"In consideration of the lockdown and its uncertainty, we would like to announce the conclusion of the CBA Executive Cup," added Maceda. "We hope that everyone will stay healthy and we pray that these dark times will end soon so that we may start anew."

Christopher Conwi of San Juan Knights Navy and Ryan Ripalda of Palayan City Capitals signed on behalf of their respective teams.

Palayan City drew first blood with a 79-74 win in the opener of their best-of-three title showdown last Feb. 29, before San Juan evened the series with a 74-66 victory in Game 2 held in Gapan City last March

The two teams will now split the PHP1-million cash prize. (PR)
