TACLOBAN CITY – A group of businessmen here has turned over disinfectants to 138 villages on Tuesday to boost the city’s community-level battle against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Tacloban Association of Barangay (village) Chairmen president Eden Pineda said the Philippine Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) Tacloban-Leyte chapter responded to the plea of village officials to help them raise their capacity to conduct disinfection.

Key PCCI local chapter officers led the ceremonial turnover of sprayers and chemicals to village chiefs that will be used for the disinfection and sanitation. The event was held at the Asian Development Foundation College.

"We only got 15 sprayers because there are small villages that can be disinfected within 30 minutes. Smaller villages clustered to ensure that all areas will be able to use the sprayers," Pineda said.

Village officials have asked the business group to assist them in the disinfection drive following the launching of sanitizing activities in major roads, downtown areas, and alleys of the city on Sunday.

“I am glad that our village officials in the city are pro-active, acting on their own to help their communities free from the worldwide pandemic of Covid-19,” PCCI Tacloban Chapter president Eugene Tan told reporters.

Firefighters from the government and private sector have started its daily disinfection drive while the city is under community quarantine to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

For three weeks, firemen, and volunteers of the Bureau of Fire Protection, Central Tacloban Filipino-Chinese Volunteer Fire Brigade, Delta Volunteer Fire Brigade, and Tacloban Filipino-Chinese Chamber Volunteer Fire Brigade will be sanitizing the streets and alleys of 138 villages.

The idea, proposed by the PCCI Tacloban-Leyte, is in support of the directive of Mayor Alfred Romualdez, placing the city under restricted community quarantine from March 21 to April 12. (PNA)
