BUTUAN CITY – Relief operations are launched by local government units (LGUs) in Agusan del Sur to help poor families affected by the 2019 coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

In the town of Prosperidad, more than 7,000 families in 10 barangays received relief goods and food packs during a massive relief operation on Monday led by the Prosperidad Task Force on Covid-19 composed of the local government, the line agencies, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Philippine Army.

In a joint statement on Tuesday, the Prosperidad local government unit (LGU) and the Army’s 3rd Special Forces Battalion (3SFBn) said the task force will continue to reach out to the other 22 villages in the municipality.

Around 13,000 more households will receive basic necessities as the relief operations will continue to roll to different barangays until April 15, the statement said.

The 10 barangays covered by the operations included La Purisima, Magsaysay, Los Arcos, San Roque, San Rafael, San Vicente, San Lorenzo, San Jose, La Perian, and Sta. Irene. Each family was provided with five kilos of rice and other necessities.

Prosperidad Mayor Frederick Plaza Mellana commended the members of the task force for the effective delivery of the relief goods to barangays.

Mellana also called on residents to strictly follow the protocols of the community quarantine to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“Please cooperate and avoid the spread of fake news and misleading information to avoid any conflict or anything that would ruin the plan and measures of the government. The LGU of Prosperidad, with the support of the members of the task force, will do its best to provide support while we are into this crisis,” Mellana said.

1st Lt. Krisjuper Andreo Punsalan, 3SFBn civil-military operations officer, assured that the military will provide the necessary support to help Prosperidad "deliver the needs of the people, especially in the remote areas."

“There are villages that we need to reach out until April 15. The Army will always be with the task force in the unified efforts to reach far-flung villages to provide food and other necessities to residents while we are also working to contain the spread of Covid-19,” Punsalan told Philippine News Agency Tuesday.
