LEGAZPI CITY – The Energy Development Corporation (EDC) has given more than PHP2.5 million worth of in-kind donations to host local government units (LGUs) in Bicol to help in the ongoing fight against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Eduardo Jimenez, EDC Stakeholder Relations Office head, in an interview on Wednesday, said the company is one with the people in communities, especially those that host its power plants, in these trying times.

“It is our duty not only to produce uninterrupted, clean and renewable energy, but also to extend our resources to those who are in need. The crisis brought by the Covid-19 pandemic may be a new challenge for us, but our 'bayanihan' as Filipinos lives on,” he said.

Jimenez said EDC lent two 40-foot air-conditioned container vans to the City of Sorsogon, one of the host provinces of the company, to be used as patient care center for probable and suspected Covid-19 cases.

“We also donated various medical supplies such as thermometer and medicines (antibiotics, multivitamins, paracetamol) to Manito Rural Health Unit in Albay alongside some 1,000 liters of fuel donations to the local government unit (LGU) of Manito also in Albay,” he added.

To aid in its two host LGUs' efforts to provide food security to their constituents, EDC also provided 598 sacks of rice to about 5,947 households in nine barangays of Sorsogon City and Manito, Albay.

“With the continuous implementation of the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon, mass transportation is suspended, people movement is limited, workforce is paralyzed, thus, we wanted to make sure that we are able to provide at least source of food for the table for our host-communities here in Bicol,” Jimenez said.

EDC operates the 140-MW Bacon-Manito Geothermal Project that supplies clean and reliable power to the Luzon grid. (PNA)
