TACLOBAN CITY – The provincial government of Northern Samar on Thursday morning declared suspension of work in all offices both private and public due to the threat of Typhoon Ambo (international name Vongfong).

This was upon the recommendation of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC), as tropical wind cyclone signal No. 3 was raised over the province and northern part of Eastern and Samar.

“However, agencies and offices whose functions involve the delivery of basic health services, preparedness and response to disasters, or other vital services shall continue their operations and render the necessary service,” Governor Edwin Ongchuan said in a statement.

This includes the PDRRMC and the provincial health and social welfare and development offices. Ongchuan also asked the uniformed government personnel to be ready for any eventuality.

In its 8 a.m. severe weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said ‘Ambo’ was last seen 187 kilometers east southeast of Catarman, Northern Samar.

The typhoon packs maximum sustained winds of up to 155 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 190 kph, moving westward at 15 kph.

Violent winds and heavy to torrential rains will begin affecting the Northern part of the Samar islands in the next 12 hours, PAGASA said.

The storm is expected to make landfall on Thursday afternoon or evening in Northern Samar before heading towards Sorsogon. (PNA)
