61K families evacuate as 'Ambo' hits Bicol

LEGAZPI CITY – A total of 61,106 families or more than 300,000 people sought refuge in 2,332 evacuation shelters as Typhoon Ambo made landfall in Bicol on Thursday night, a police report said on Friday.

Maj. Malu Calubaquib, Police Regional Office-5 spokesperson, said reports from various police units in the region as of 6 a.m. Friday showed Sorsogon has the highest number of evacuees with 28,255 families or 141,275 people.

“Then it is followed by Albay with 14,688 families or 73,440 people; Camarines Sur - 12,799 families or 63,995 individuals; Masbate - 2,799 families or 13,995 people; Catanduanes - 2,015 families or 10,075 people and Naga City with only 550 families or 2,750 (people),” she said.

Calubaquib added there are also 322 passengers and 165 vehicles stranded in the ports of Sorsogon and Albay.

Meanwhile, electricity was cut off in Albay Thursday night as a preemptive measure, to resume after power and transmission lines assessment have been completed on Friday.

So far, no incident of flooding was reported even as the typhoon pummelled the Albay-Sorsogon area.

As of this posting, road networks and major highways are passable and no casualty is yet reported. (PNA)
