ZAMBOANGA CITY – Several fabrication laboratories (FabLabs) assisted by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have provided thousands of protective gears to front-liners amid the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) outbreak.

DTI 9 (Zamboanga Peninsula) Director Ceferino Rubio said the FabLabs are managed by the Zamboanga City State Polytechnic College (ZCSPC), Jose Rizal State Memorial University (JRMSU) in Dapitan City, and JH Cerilles State College (JHCSC) in Pagadian City, which received assistance through DTI’s Shared Service Facility (SSF) program.

Rubio said the FabLabs had been provided with highly sophisticated equipment, such as laser cutters, milling machines, print and cut machines, 3D printers, and sewing and embroidery machine.

The region's FabLabs have already produced and donated protective gears to the front-liners – ZCSPC, 9,000 face shields, and 754 masks; JRMSU, 9,296 face masks, 24 personal protective equipment (PPE) gowns and 1,402 face shields; and JHCSC, 4,654 face shields, 1,000 face masks, and two aerosol boxes.

Rubio said the PPE sets were given out to various front-liners, among them local government units, national government agencies, media practitioners, hospitals, clinics, banks, and checkpoint personnel.

Al-Zamir Lipae, DTI assistant regional director, commended the effort of DTI provincial offices and other stakeholders for offering free materials, such as density fiberboards, PVC clear covers, and garters, for face shield production. (PNA)
