TACLOBAN CITY – Eastern Visayas has 42 new cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), its highest number of infections recorded in one day, the Department of Health (DOH) reported late Friday.

In a press statement, DOH 8 (Eastern Visayas) information officer John Paul Roca said they would be identified as the region’s Patients 91 to 132.

Of the new cases, 36 are from Leyte – 17 in Alangalang town, 11 in Dagami, five in Bato, and one each in Hilongos, La Paz, and Tacloban City.

Three were recorded in Southern Leyte – two in Padre Burgos town and one in Macrohon.

Gandara in Samar has two confirmed cases and one in Almeria, Biliran.

Roca said they are part of 223 confirmatory test results released by the Eastern Visayas regional Covid-19 testing center, 44 of which were positive, including the repeat tests of two coronavirus patients from Tarangnan, Samar and Naval, Biliran.

He added that the newly reported cases include a health worker but most of them are residents returning from Cebu and Metro Manila.

“As of now, we are still gathering more information from the respective local government units who among them are locally stranded individuals or overseas Filipino workers,” Roca said.

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, a total of 132 cases have been confirmed in the region, with 34 recoveries and zero death.

Other areas in the region with confirmed cases are the towns of Catarman and San Isidro in Northern Samar; Villareal and the cities of Catbalogan and Calbayog in Samar; Burauen, Abuyog, Tolosa, Jaro, Isabel, Leyte, Tanauan, Pastrana, Calubian, and Baybay City all in Leyte. (PNA)
