Davao LGU offers 42K jobs to retrenched employees

DAVAO CITY – Amid the adverse impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) on the economy, the city government here is offering emergency employment opportunities to help residents cope up with the pandemic.

In a live radio broadcast, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said the city government is targeting about 42,000 individuals for the emergency employment project dubbed as “Work For Davao”.

“This is an emergency employment cash for work na trabaho para sa mga tao nga na (for the people) retrench for the lay-off or nagsirado ang (shutdown) office or business,” Duterte said. “We are targeting around 42,000 individuals para sa atong (for our) Work for Davao, Php 396 per day for 10 days.”

Since the start of the community quarantine in March, a total of 10,133 business establishments in the Davao Region have ceased operations as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to data provided by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 11.

Aside from the emergency employment project, the city government will also offer educational assistance to students coming from families whose income have significantly declined due to the pandemic.

“[Ang] Eskwela Davao, kini is an educational assistance project sa mga anak sa mga reduced og income. Wala sila nawalaan og trabaho, pero na reduce ang ilang income tungod sa Covid-19 (The Eskwela Davao, this is an educational assistance project for the children of those whose income have been reduced. Those who did not lose their jobs, but their income was reduced due to Covid-19),” she said.

Duterte said the educational assistance program targets students in kindergarten, elementary school, high school and senior high school. (PCOO Davao)
