ILIGAN CITY – Some 20 families escaped unhurt after a landslide hit a transitory shelter site in Barangay Boganga, Marawi City on Friday evening.
Marawi City information officer Alexander Alag said the landslide was brought by the continuous heavy rains on Friday afternoon.
In a phone interview with the Philippine News Agency (PNA) on Saturday, Alag said the unfinished drainage at the upper part of the shelter site triggered a mudflow down to Sectors 54 and 55 of the shelter area.
“If the rains continued for hours, more landslides would have occurred and 20 houses may have been buried in the mud," he said in the dialect, adding that mud washed out only a few meters away from the houses.
Alag said the mud deposits that covered a road leading to the shelter had been removed by a team consisting of personnel of the city disaster risk reduction and management office, the Army’s 82nd Infantry Battalion, and the local police. (PNA)
