BACOLOD CITY -- The body of a missing fisherman was recovered on Friday morning, almost three days after his boat capsized in the waters of Ilog, Negros Occidental, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported.

The victim was identified as Isagani Avansenia, 32.

Lt. Commander Jansen Benjamin, chief of PCG-Negros Occidental, said the body was found floating about two kilometers from the shoreline of Barangay 1 during the retrieval operation at around 6 a.m.

Family members identified Isagani, who together with his elder brother Ivar, 35, both residents of Barangay Bocana, went fishing on Monday night.

Around 11 p.m., their boat, FBCa Gadying 1, got tangled with a fishing line of a commercial fishing vessel or a trawler, and capsized.

Ivar held on to an icebox, and was later rescued by the crew of FBCa Marilyn Rose skippered by Jenni Villegas, who reported the incident to Barangay 1 councilman Rodante Ferres.

On Wednesday, personnel of neighboring Cauayan Coast Guard Sub-Station coordinated with barangay officials to conduct a joint search and rescue operation.

Coast Guard divers scoured the waters off Cauayan, Kabankalan City, Himamaylan City, and even Guimaras until the fisherman’s body was found.

In a radio interview, Ivar said that while he was floating at sea, he used a flashlight to signal a call for help, but the trawler’s crew did not respond. (PNA)
