CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga – The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has vowed to provide more livelihood assistance to indigenous peoples (IPs) in Barangay Mawacat, Floridablanca, this province.

BFAR-Central Luzon Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz said they are extending aid through the provision of stock enhancement of 20,000 tilapia fingerlings, 10,000 post-larvae "ulang" (prawn), and 10,000 common carp in rivers.

Cruz also said the BFAR will provide livelihood intervention of 10 portable solar lamps and 10 gill nets to the tribesmen.

He also said IPs interested in fish farming will be provided with fisheries training on aquaculture and good practices.

“We cannot deny help to our IP brethren. The least we can do is to provide them with a set of skills and tools that suit their needs and their culture and can support their livelihood as well,” Cruz said in a statement.

Last July 26, BFAR also released fingerlings composed of 28,500 tilapia, common carp and silver perch into the Sapang Bayabas River to help the IPs of Mawacat, who are generally dependent on the river for their livelihood.

This was under the "Ahon Lahat, Pagkaing Sapat" Covid-19 program which aims to help ensure a food-secure nation especially during this time of a health crisis. (PNA)
