BALAOAN, La Union – A police officer who was charged with two counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder has not resisted arrest when served with a warrant.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ilocos Police Regional Office (PRO-1) said Master Sgt. Dario Naval Cahigas, police assigned at the Regional Police Holding Assistance Service of PRO-1, surrendered to the authorities during the serving of an arrest warrant.

“He will undergo judicial proceedings and shall serve the penalty prescribed by the law if proven guilty. We will not tolerate any form of misconduct in the rank and file. We will make sure that the rules will be implemented squarely,” PRO-1 regional director Brig. Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said.

Joint personnel of San Fernando City Police Station, together with the Regional Intelligence Division and Regional Investigation and Detective Management Division of Police Regional Office 1, facilitated the arrest of Cahigas Monday here.

He is now under the custody of San Fernando City Police Station for proper disposition, PRO-1 added.

Meanwhile, Azurin said he will exert more stringent efforts in investigating police officers with criminal and administrative cases in line with the internal cleansing program of the Philippine National Police.

Cahigas was one of police suspects in the ambush of Balaoan Vice Mayor Al-Fred Concepcion, Mayor Aleli Concepcion and their companions.

The ambush happened on Nov. 14, 2018 when the Concepcions were on their way to the municipal hall onboard their car when they were blocked by gunmen who fired at their convoy.

This resulted in the deaths of the vice mayor and his bodyguard Michael Ulep, while mayor Concepcion was wounded with eight others, some of whom were bystanders in front of the Balaoan Central School.  (PNA)
