BAGUIO CITY – Some 11 coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases of the 43 reported Sunday were from the city's abattoir.

Public Information Office chief Aileen Refuerzo, in its advisory at 7:20 pm Sunday, said the city’s slaughterhouse area now has a total of 38 cases prompting Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong to place some purok (sub-villages) under a hard lockdown for 14 days.

These areas include three sub-villages near the slaughterhouse, Lourdes Extension and Barangay Ferdinand.

Areas under hard lockdown prevent residents from going out of their houses.

Magalong earlier said the expected surge in the number of Covid-19 cases is a result of aggressive contact tracing and expanded testing activities.

Of the 43 new cases, which is the highest single-day number of coronavirus disease cases since March, 33 are contacts of current cases.

The city government is planning to review the processes and systems implemented in the abattoir to identify and correct the gaps in its health protocols.

More teams have been deployed to address the increase in cases through contact tracing, disinfection, isolation, quarantine, testing and medical interventions. (PNA)
