MANILA – The country’s two telecommunications (telecom) companies have been recognized by independent mobile analytics firm, Opensignal, for marked improvements in their services compared to other telecom companies (telco) worldwide.

In a statement on Wednesday, Globe Telecom was recognized by Opensignal as one of the “most improved telco in video experience worldwide,” based on data from the first half of 2019 compared with the first half of 2020, during its Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2020.

“Globe’s improvement score of 32.7 percent signifies impressive gains with the worldwide average at 14 percent improvement,” Globe said.

Opensignal, it said, based its findings on the average video experience of Opensignal users on 3G and 4G network, with a “methodology that involves measuring real-world video streams” of more than 180 telcos from more than 50 countries.

Gil Genio, Globe’s chief technology and information officer, said more “remarkable improvements” could be expected from Globe as the telco continues its “aggressive” network upgrades.

“As one of the Global Rising Stars recognized by Opensignal, Globe is proud to be a telco company that commits to improve data service to our subscribers,” Globe said.

Meanwhile, in a separate statement, Smart Communications said it was recognized by Opensignal as one of the “global rising stars” or among the top 30 telcos that had the greatest improvement in 4G availability based on data from the first half of 2019 compared to the first half of 2020.

It said Smart’s 4G availability improved by 17.9 percent based on Opensignal’s report on “over 403 billion measurements gathered from close to 96 million devices” from 180+ telcos.

“Smart’s 4G availability scores have come a long way since 2017, increasing by 27.8 points from 59.1 percent in Q4 2017 to 86.9 percent in Q2 2020,” Smart said.

Alfredo Panlilio, Smart president and chief executive officer, said the company would continue to invest in improving its network and benchmark its performance against countries, such as Vietnam and Thailand.

“This citation is a testament to our commitment to improving the experience of our customers,” Panlilio said. (PNA)
