DIGOS CITY – A former village councilor was killed by police and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) operatives during a buy-bust operation that ended in a shootout Tuesday afternoon in Barangay Aplaya here.

Lt. Col. Vici Anthony Tababa, Digos City acting police chief, identified the slain suspect Wednesday as Roy Miro Calingacion, 40, a regional level "high-value target" for illegal drugs.

Tababa said Calingacion was an incumbent councilor in Barangay Dulangan here when he was arrested for drug trafficking in 2011. He was released from jail last year.

Calingacion drew a .45-caliber handgun and fired on authorities after sensing he was dealing with a police officer who acted as the poseur-buyer during the drug sting, the police official said, prompting the operatives to return fire.

Tababa said the suspect was immediately brought to Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital (DSPH) but was declared dead on arrival.

Authorities recovered a total of seven sachets of suspected shabu with an estimated street value of PHP368,000, cash in different denominations, and other pieces of evidence, he said. (PNA)
