DUMAGUETE CITY – The electoral board of the Diocese of Dumaguete is calling on the youth to register for the May 2022 presidential elections with the Commission on Elections (Comelec), now that they are already allowed to leave their homes.

In an interview on Friday, Msgr. Julius Perpetuo S. Heruela, who heads the electoral board, highlighted the role of the youth in nation-building, as well as in actively participating in the country’s affairs for a better future.

“Makita nato nga daghan pang mga batan-on nga wala pa naka register bisan nga naa na sa voting age kay tungod aning pandemic (We see that a lot of young people have not registered yet, even if they are already at a voting age, because of this pandemic),” Heruela said.

The Comelec has imposed safety protocols in registration areas, based on the guidelines set by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID), he added.

Heruela urged the young people to visit the Comelec office in their town and city to find out about possible satellite voter registration.

“Please register so that you can participate in our democratic process and exercise your right to vote in the coming election,” he said.

The Comelec announced the resumption of the registration of voters on September 1, except in areas under enhanced community quarantine and modified enhanced community quarantine.

Negros Oriental is under modified general community quarantine and people aged 15 years to 65 years have been allowed to go out of their homes. (PNA)
