MANILA – The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday gave an initial 50 bicycles to commuting Filipino workers to help them cope with the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) on their livelihood.

PNP Chief, Gen. Camilo Cascolan, led the turnover of the bicycles during the launch of the police force's “PADYAKabuhayan” program in Camp Crame.

Cascolan said the bicycles would be given to the working masses to provide them with an alternative means of transportation as they go to work and help them save money for their families’ food and other necessities.

He said “PADYAKabuhayan” likewise demonstrates the compassionate heart of the police towards Filipino workers already suffering from the economic impact of the lockdown.

Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) administrator Bernard Olalia and Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) deputy administrator Esther Margaux Uson also graced the event.

PNP Director for Police Community Relations, Brig. Gen Rhodel Sermonia, said the “PADYAKabuhayan” is a new component of the Barangay Covid Defense (BACOD), a community relations initiative that aims to help workers whose jobs have been affected by the limited operations of public transport induced by the Covid-19 lockdown.

Sermonia said the donation of the initial bicycles was made possible through the strong partnership forged by the PNP and various stakeholders and well-meaning individuals and companies.

The bicycles were donated by the Japan Tobacco Company. (PNA)
