TACLOBAN CITY – The PHP15-million accommodation facilities in Southern Leyte are now used by health workers battling the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) said on Friday.

The four single-story buildings completed in September were formally turned over to the Department of Health (DOH) on Thursday.

"The turnover was delayed since some of our personnel were quarantined after exposure to a confirmed patient," said DPWH Southern Leyte chief Ma. Margarita Junia in a phone interview on Friday.

Three of these accommodation facilities are located inside the compound of Salvacion Oppus Yñiguez Memorial Provincial Hospital (SOYMPH) and one in Combado village, both in Maasin City, the provincial capital.

Each building has eight beds divided by wooden partitions, kitchen area, dining hall, and common toilet facilities, equipped with air-conditioning units.

“These shelters are solely for use by doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals in the province. I am happy that we are able to address not only the need for quarantine facilities for Covid-19 patients but also the need for isolation facilities or dormitories of our medical front-liners, our modern-day heroes,” Junia said.

She added that the completed facilities will be maintained and operated by DOH and SOYMPH.

To date, the province has confirmed a total of 479 coronavirus cases, based on the DOH monitoring report. (PNA)
