MANILA – Aftershocks are likely from the magnitude 5.1 quake that hit Surigao del Norte early Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic quake struck 15 km. northeast of the municipality of Burgos at 2:27 a.m. It had a depth of 18 km.

Intensity IV was felt in the towns of Burgos, Sta. Monica, Dapa, and San Isidro; while intensity III was felt in San Benito, all in Surigao del Norte. Intensity II was reported in Surigao City.

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports by people who felt the earthquake, while instrumental intensity is measured using intensity meter that measures ground acceleration, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum, Jr. earlier said.

Phivolcs, meanwhile, said damage is not expected from the earthquake.

Solidum earlier said that damage starts at intensity VI based on Phivolcs' scale. (PNA)
