LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – Some 500 front-liners from the Philippine National Police (PNP) in this city received rice assistance from a group as a way of recognizing their contribution in the fight against coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

Edward S. Mendez, Lapu-Lapu City tourism officer, on Sunday said the Inday Sa Kusina Project (ISKP) picked the members of the Lapu-Lapu City Police Office as recipients of 2,500 kilos of rice and multivitamins, citing their bravery in carrying out their tasks amid the pandemic.

“There’s no amount of compensation to fully pay our brave members of the PNP in facing the day-to-day risk in helping our medical front-liners fight against Covid-19. They enforce law and order during the pandemic," Mendez told the Philippine News Agency.

He said the "rice subsidy is a small gesture of communal gratitude to the bravery of the men and women of the Lapu-Lapu city police".

Mendez, also a convenor of ISKP, said volunteers and motorcycle riders who helped authorities in setting up checkpoints also received a total of 1,000 kilos of rice and multivitamins.

The city, he said, recognizes the efforts of the police force in the drop of Covid-19 cases in the city which now only has 2.3 percent or 57 active cases out of the 2,477 reported infections since March.

He said that 180 bags equivalent to 900 kilos of five-kilo packed rice and multivitamins were also distributed on Saturday to the members of the Cebu Association of Tour Guides (CAT-G) who lost their livelihood during the strict community quarantine in the city.

He said that tour guides are among the most affected sectors in the tourism industry during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The outreach project of Inday Sa Kusina and the Eagles club is just our small way of helping them during this crisis,” Mendez said, adding that soon, a livelihood program will assist them in bridging toward recovery.

Mendez said the ISKP group partnered with the Hope Now Philippines Foundation, Movenpick Resort Cebu and the Cebu Central Fraternal Order of Eagles in the distribution of the rice aid.

The group, he said, will also give rice aid to the members of the Cebu media. (PNA)
