MANILA – The Quezon City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (QCDRRMO) on Thursday has called on residents to remain vigilant despite improving weather conditions in the aftermath of Typhoon Ulysses.
In an interview, QCDRRMO head Mike Marasigan said that together with Mayor Joy Belmonte, they are personally overseeing the evacuation of residents in areas hard-hit by Typhoon Ulysses.
“Patuloy maging alerto kahit medyo gumanda na ang panahon hindi pa rin nakakalabas sa area of responsibility si Typhoon Ulysses, manatili sa safe areas (Stay alert even if the weather started to improve especially because Typhoon Ulysses is still within our area of responsibility, try to stay in safe areas),” Marasigan said.
The city government said that as of Thursday noon, 2,467 families or 8,286 individuals have been affected by the typhoon.
As of this writing, 31 barangays were affected while the city has 44 evacuation centers located in different barangays.
Among the areas still underwater are Del Monte, Masambong, Sta. Cruz, Sto. Domingo, Bagong Silangan, Bagumbayan, East Kamias at Roxas.
Marasigan assured that evacuees are being attended to by their respective barangay officials, QCDRRMO, QC Health Department, QC Social Services and Development Department, Office of the City Mayor, and other agencies in QC.
Food packs, as well as vitamins, are also being provided especially to children, senior citizens, and pregnant women.
Marasigan said that the evacuees will remain in the facilities until the weather bureau lowers the storm signal in the city.
He said that the recorded peak of Typhoon Ulysses happened around 4 a.m. up to 7 a.m. when the San Mateo River overflowed.
The QCDRRMO already conducted preemptive evacuation on Wednesday evening but some residents reportedly returned to their houses and were trapped.
